Experience

THE INVESTOR

My journey to financial literacy started in the U.S. roughly ten years ago in the aftermath of the 2008 market crash. I had not been able to study market economy dynamics during my education in Georgia. Financial literacy is something I had to teach myself. Here I will highlight the importance of financial literacy and open the door to doing your own research in specific areas that interest you. I will also share my experience on how I started allocating time for the daily stock market and learned investment habits. All over the world, most people are not receiving financial training in school, and almost everyone learns it on their own. At least Georgians are not necessarily behind the average person from any other country in their understanding of finance and investing. Most of the public information available from the government is technical, but the national bank of Georgia hosts information about financial literacy programs at: https://nbg.gov.ge/en/publications/financial-education.

Nonetheless, exposure to relevant educational videos and statistical data must be part of students' instruction from the early grade levels. Early training in statistics, accounting, and finance will set a foundation. It could be a good idea to make financial literacy a requirement for High School diplomas, which many states, including the State of Florida, adopted. Another critical factor here is, of course, providing students with sufficient opportunities and resources for early learning that they make an informed career choice that is not driven by outside pressure or a desire for popularity!

Lastly, I will share my experience with the investment habit I learned from the mentor my close friend recommended. I took five classes for five hours with the mentor, developed an investment habit in a market economy, and made my roadmap to reach financial independence. As a self-learned Quality Analyst who makes enough to invest, the most significant point for me was my mentor's introduction to the stock market, specifically Indexes/Mutual Funds and long-term investment icon Warren Buffet.

I started my financial path and began planning accordingly. Developing an investment habit as early as possible is critical to reaching financial independence. It is equally crucial to be literate in the financial world, specifically the stock market. We all need to ask critical questions about the current state of our own financial literacy and develop a personal plan. I also think that accessibility of hands-on resources and media should be sufficient for individuals, whether you're a student, police or military officer, construction worker, or farmer. And reminder, there is no point in working and earning without having a sound plan for reaching financial independence as early as possible!
